If you run a business, you already know being visible online isn’t optional, it’s essential. One of the most powerful (and free!) tools to help local customers find you is Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business).

It’s your digital storefront on Google, and when it’s set up and optimized the right way, it can drive real results.

What is Google Business Profile?

Think of Google Business Profile (GBP) as your business’s home base on Google Search and Google Maps. It’s where customers can see your name, hours, location, contact info, website, and reviews, all at a glance.

When your profile is fully built out and kept up-to-date, it increases your chances of showing up in local searches and gives people more confidence in choosing you.

Why It Matters - Key Benefits:

A well-managed Google Business Profile can help you:

  • Get seen in local searches and Google Maps
  • Build trust with reviews and star ratings
  • Connect instantly through calls, messages, and bookings
  • Improve your SEO, bringing in more organic traffic
  • Track performance with helpful insights and data

How to Set Up Your Profile

New to Google Business Profile? Here’s how to get started:

  1. Head to Google Business Profile
  2. Sign in with a Google account (ideally your business email)
  3. Enter your business name and choose a category
  4. Add your location and contact info
  5. Complete your business description and upload photos
  6. Submit your profile and follow the steps for verification

Verifying Your Business

Google needs to confirm that you’re the rightful owner of your listing. Here’s how that usually happens:

Already Listed But Not Claimed?

If your business is showing up on Google but you don’t own the listing yet:

  1. Search your business name in Google or Google Maps
  2. Click “Own this business?
  3. Follow the prompts to request ownership

Need Access to a Profile Someone Else Manages?

If someone else set up your profile and you need access:

  1. Go to your business on Google Business Profile
  2. Select “Request Access
  3. Fill in your contact details and reason
  4. The current owner will have three days to respond
  5. If they don’t respond, Google may let you take ownership

Managing Multiple Locations?

You can manage multiple business locations from one Google account.

  1. Log into your Google Business Profile dashboard
  2. Click “Add business
  3. Choose “Add single business” or “Import multiple businesses
  4. Fill out the info for each location
  5. Verify each location individually

How to Optimize Your Profile for Best Results

Setting up your profile is just the beginning. Keep it fresh and engaging with these best practices:

  • Complete every field – hours, description, services, contact info
  • Upload high-quality photos – profiles with images get more clicks and direction requests
  • Ask for reviews – and take time to respond to them
  • Keep info updated – especially hours and contact details
  • Use Google Posts – promote events, sales, or news directly on your profile
